NEWS - BIRKENHEAD PARK REPORT - 06/05/2008

Birkenhead Park finished their domestic season with a busy weekend of activity. On Saturday a lively touring game ended 38-37 in favour of the visiting Percy Park from Northumberland, Stuart Brown’s conversion attempt to win the match struck both posts before rebounding.

On Sunday Park won the bowl in the Oswestry 10’s competition but did not make much of an impression at the Caldy Sevens after putting on a good display against Sale Sharks in the opening game. Also on Sunday there was success for the Park Junior Colts who won the Cheshire Plate defeating host club Sandbach 23-17 in a hard fought final. Ben Hughes, Matt McKenna and Jack Ashcroft scored the tries for Birkenhead . The trophy was a fitting reward for the Colts who competed strongly in the A League of the Lancashire and Cheshire Colts League. The vastly experienced Shaun Gallagher has been lending his expertise to the Colts coaching set up and is highly optimistic about the team “there are a lot of very talented players in this group and some of them have big futures in the game. Hopefully next season they will compete strongly in the Senior Colts league and also be challenging before long for the Park senior sides.”

Park player coach Jon Sewell captained the Cheshire team against Yorkshire in the County Championship match at Macclesfield and will be looking for an improved result at New Brighton this Saturday against Lancashire . Park flanker Dan Palmer is again likely to be in the Lancashire team while hooker Chris Jones will be hoping to get a chance for Cheshire after remaining on the bench last week. Former Park skipper Mark Ferguson is the new backs coach for Cheshire this season as well as taking on the same role with the Scottish Exiles.

To finally round proceedings off, the Upper Park will be hosting the Great Britain Fire Service v Irish Police match on Wednesday 14 th May at 2pm, former Park scrum half Paul Kay will be flying the local flag for Merseyside in the Fire Service team.
